The fifth
SACOSAN will be hosted by Nepal from 22-24 October 2013 in Kathmandu
with motto of:
"Sanitation
for All:All for Sanitation".
Aiming to promote hygienic practices
and enhance the quality of life in South Asian countries, a regional conference
on sanitation has been inaugurated by
Nepalese President Ram Baran Yadav.
Around 300 delegates,
including former external affairs minister Madhav Singh Solanki, are among the
dignitaries attending the 5th South Asian Conference on Sanitation.
"Constitution of
Nepal has guaranteed for right to live in safer environment to its citizens and
sanitation journey in Nepal is one of the step ensuring rights given by
constitution," said President Yadav, who inaugurated the three-day
regional conference on Monday.
Besides eight South-Asian countries, representatives from
the World Health Organization, World Bank and UNICEF are also among the particpants.
Around 50 sanitation
experts will also present papers followed by group discussions.
The conference will conclude with the announcement of the
Kathmandu Declaration as a way forward to better sanitation in the region.
South Asian
Conference on Sanitation (SACOSAN), a government led biennial convention held
on a rotational basis in each SAARC country provides a platform for
interaction on sanitation.
SACOSANs are intended to develop a Regional agenda on sanitation, enabling
learning from the past experiences and setting actions for the future. The
objectives of such conferences are to accelerate the progress in sanitation and
hygiene promotion in South Asia and to enhance quality of people's life. The
SACOSAN process is instrumental to generate political wills towards better
sanitation in the region.
South Asian countries namely; Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and
Sri Lanka are the participating countries. The first conference was held in
Bangladesh in 2003, the second in Pakistan in 2006, the third in India in 2008 and the fourth in Sri Lanka in 2011.
