Indian journalist Shubranshu Choudhary won digital activism
award on 20 March 2014 for regional news service. Shubranshu Choudhary defeated
American Whistleblower Edward Snowden.
Indian journalist Shubhranshu Choudhary has been given the
2014 Google Digital Activism Award for his work in using mobile phones to bring
local news to remote Indian regions in their native language.
Other nominees of this award were TAILS, which is an open
source encryption tool, and Free Weibo, which is a social network from China.
Shubhranshu Choudhary is the founder of CGNet Swara, which
empowers tribals in Chhattisgarh and connects them to the world outside using
various digital means. With this project, Choudhary gave the voices of tribals
a global platform via Internet and mobile phone usage.
Google Digital Activism Award is a part of Index Freedom of
Expression Awards. The award recognized the people who have made it big in one
of the four categories, namely advocacy, arts, digital activism, and
journalism.
