December 22 is National Mathematics Day
in India, in honour of the great Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan who was born
in Erode on 22 December 1897.
Srinivasa
Ramanujan FRS was an Indian mathematician and autodidact who, with almost no
formal training in pure mathematics, made extraordinary contributions to
mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions.
The
declaration was made by Prime Minister of India, during the inaugural ceremony
of the celebrations to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan
held at the Madras University Centenary Auditorium on 26 February 2012.
